Controversial Psychosurgery Resulted in a Nobel Prize
Article examines the controversy surrounded the presentation of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1949 to Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz for his role in the development of the psychosurgery procedure known as the prefrontal leukotomy, which after an initial period came to be used particularly in the treatment of schizophrenia. The procedure would later be referred to as a lobotomy. Some critics today are calling for the Nobel committee to revoke Moniz's prize.
