Author Guidelines

Please make a photocopy of your manuscript and send us the original. It is important that we get the best available copy of your manuscript. Your backup copy is imperative as a reference to answer any queries which may crop up and also for you to check against during the Page Proof stage.

Working Table of Contents
Once you are satisfied with order, content, and completeness of your manuscript, prepare a Table of Contents, listing all parts, sections, chapters, major headings, and authors. In anthologies list the article title and author(s). The text should match the order, context, and titles of the Table of Contents. This list verifies the sequence in which the material will appear in your book and functions as your order. Any copyrighted material that is included in your book, but is not listed, will delay the production process.

Numbering
Once your manuscript is complete, it is important that it stays that way. To ensure that the original manuscript remains in the correct order throughout all phases of production, consecutively number all pages, in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Cross-Referencing
When it is necessary to refer to another section, table, or previous text, by page number, write down the page number where the text falls in your original manuscript and, whenever possible, also indicate a chapter and section number. The reference number will be adjusted when the final layout is complete.

Sequence of Electronically Produced Books
While organization and sequence of topics may be determined best by you in conjunction with your editor, nontextual material should appear in the following order:
  • Title page (all books)
  • Copyright page (all books)
  • Copyright Acknowledgments (books containing permissions)
  • Dedication (optional)
  • Table of Contents (all books)
  • Foreword (optional--written by someone other than the author)
  • Preface (optional--written by the author)
  • Acknowledgments (optional)
  • Introduction (optional)
  • Part, Section, or Chapter
  • Glossary (optional)
  • Bibliography (optional)
  • Index (optional)
Front Matter
Every Pearson Custom Publishing book contains a complete Title Page, Copyright Page, Copyright Acknowledgment Page, and a Table of Contents.
  • The Title Page lists the entire title of the book, including subtitle, and the author's name and affiliation. In the case of multiple authorship, you must indicate the order in which names should appear. Double check the spelling of all names and affiliations on any correspondence. To avoid confusion, type the title of your book, every author's name and affiliation as they should appear in the printed version.
  • Copyright Acknowledgments extends the copyright page to credit specific sources or copyright holders of previously printed material that is being included in your book.
  • The Table of Contents lists all chapter titles, major headings, and authors as they appear in the text.
  • Optional parts of the front matter include the Foreword, an Introduction written by someone other than the author(s); Preface, written by the author to highlight the intentions of the book (audience, contributions to the field, purpose and scope); and Introduction, a general overview of and discussion about the use of the book.
  • Optional parts of the end matter include Solutions, Glossary, Suggested Readings, Bibliography, and Index.
Text
Chapters divide the main text by topic. Chapters may be subdivided by various levels of headings. Related sequential chapters can be gathered into parts or sections. Chapter Notes are listed at the end of a chapter as Endnotes. Bibliographic References, Suggested Readings, and Problem Solutions may be included at the end of every chapter or as separate sections in the end matter.

End Matter (Options)
If you and your editor decide to include any of the end matter options such as Solutions, Glossary, Suggested Readings, etc., they must be sent along with your completed manuscript. If you desire an Index for your book, please highlight the terms the first time they appear in your original manuscript. We will prepare a one-level index from the highlighted words. This must be complete when you submit your original manuscript; this cannot be completed at the Page Proof stage.

Preparing Your Manuscript for Submitting on Disk
This section gives a step-by-step, screen-by-screen approach to using the Production Department Microsoft Word template. If you are submitting a manuscript, please ask for this template BEFORE you begin writing. Your editor will have one available, or one can be emailed to you. Using this template will ensure your book's integrity, as well as speed the production process.

If you have already typed your manuscript, you can still utilize the template.

Disk with Corresponding Hard Copy
The Production Department needs an accurate and up-to-date hard copy of the disk files. The hard copy is used for reference throughout the production process as well as for checking during the proofreading stage. Sending the clearest and most complete photocopies of materials will help speed your book through the production process. That means submitting pages that do not contain smudges, curved type, cut off type, dot matrix print, blurred type, dark reproductions, etc.

Mailing Disks
Floppy disks should be mailed in special protective envelopes, available at most stationery stores. Please do not use paper clips on your disk; it could possibly erase all the material on the disk.

Manuscripts Not on Disk
The manuscript which you submit at this time should be complete. No changes or alterations can be made. Hard copy, the physical pages of a manuscript, are scanned or keyed at this point.

Art for Electronically Produced Books
Illustrations that are part of copyrighted articles usually have a separate copyright and often incur additional permissions fees. The following refer to any art that appears in the final edition, whether copyrighted or original material.

Figures, Graphs, Tables, and Line Art
Tables are considered text and will be positioned closest to where they are referenced in the text. Graphs and figures, for the most part, will appear in the printed book as they were submitted, if the quality is of an acceptable level. Illustrations or text printed as solid black and white with no gradations of grey, reproduce very well. Any with shades of grey lose quality in the final printing. At times, it may prove necessary to have art redrawn or enhanced. However, this will increase production costs and extend the production schedule. Number figures, graphs, and tables consecutively.

Photos
Detail and legibility deteriorate significantly when reprinting a photo cut from a magazine or newspaper. They reproduce best when an original negative or high contrast, black and white glossy print is submitted. Indicate on your manuscript where you want your photos to appear. Photos will be scanned in at high resolution.

Labeling
Label illustrations with section or page number within the manuscript where the art belongs. Write this information on a separate paper attached as an overlay or on a sticker to the back of the photograph. Also indicate on the manuscript where the illustration should appear. Avoid writing directly on the art. Any indentations, holes, or other marks caused by paper clips, staples or paste will reduce the quality of the piece and appear in the final printing.

Page Proofs
Every electronically produced Pearson Custom Publishing book is read by a professional proofreader referring to your original copy. Once you receive your Page Proofs, the final layout of pages, you have five days to check the copy and return them to Pearson Custom Publishing. We will notify your editor at least one week prior to sending out Page Proofs to you.

Author Alterations—No Rewriting
Once you have submitted your manuscript, when you review your Page Proofs, you may only correct errors introduced during the production process. All other revisions are considered author alterations should be reserved for future editions of your text.

While removing or adding a single paragraph to a page in isolation may seem like a simple correction, either will change the length of the text and affect all subsequent pages. In some cases the entire book would have to be reformatted and repaginated requiring an entirely new production schedule and jeopardizing delivery of books in time for your start of class. This also affects the page numbers if you have requested an index. We will ask you to:

  • Look over every page of your proofs.
  • Read through all of the text, taking extra care to verify the spelling of any technical or unusual terms.
  • Double check the placement of any tables, graphs and photos.
  • Address all Proofreader Queries to the Author (marked AQ or AU in the margin) questioning content or phrasing. Indicate approval or no change necessary with an "OK."
  • Mark any other corrections clearly and legibly in red ink.
  • All of the above information is designed to make the publications of your book as painless, efficient, and seamless as possible. We strive to give you the best product possible. You are our customer and we want you to be happy with your published book.

Author FAQs

Do I have to clear permissions and do all the paperwork?
Pearson Custom Publishing clears all copyright permissions for your manuscript selections, negotiates fees, and handles all the necessary paperwork.

Can I edit material I select?

The total percentage of material you select from any one book should not exceed 10% of the total number of pages from the original source. It is best if you refrain from editing because this will prolong the permissions process. Educational use is not, in and of itself, considered "fair use". So let our experts determine whether copyright clearance should be obtained.

Can I use artwork and photographs?

If your selection contains artwork, photographs, charts, or diagrams with separate attributions, copyright clearance will need to be obtained for these as well.

Will the custom book look good?

Every element of your text will be clearly and attractively designed. A well designed cover will complete the process and complement your work.

Can I earn royalties?

As an author, you may be able to generate income through royalties. These royalties can be paid to departments, scholarship funds, or to you.

How much will the custom book cost?
The price of your custom text will depend on the material you select and the amount of original material you choose to include. However, since your students will only be purchasing the material you select and use in your course, the price is most often less than a traditional textbook. The final student purchase price is determined by the bookstore.
