Notre Dame Fanning Center for Business Communication

Notre Dame Fanning Center for Business Communication

The Eugene D. Fanning Center for Business Communication assists members of the Notre Dame community in the achievement of their academic, intellectual, and professional goals by providing instruction, guidance, and counsel in writing, speaking, and other dimensions of human communication. At the heart of this mission is a concern for the individual, a focus on ethics and integrity in business, and a commitment to the advancement of the College and the University.

Notre Dame is now a leader among top-tier business schools that have made a serious commitment to the development of communication skills in its students, and the integration of those skills with management strategy and theory.
The Center for Business Communication was established in the autumn of 1990 and, in August of 1996, was dedicated in memory of Notre Dame graduate and Chicago business executive, Eugene D. Fanning. Two years later, the Fanning Center, its faculty and programs became part of the Department of Management in the Mendoza College of Business. The Fanning Center exists to influence the ways in which both students and faculty see the role of writing, speaking, listening, and other communication behaviors in the workplace. Curricular coursework is available to both graduate and undergraduate students, along with a number of workshops, tutorials, and other not-for-credit experiences.

Richard Ivey School of Business

Richard Ivey School of Business

The Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario has been using the case method since 1922 to teach practical management skills to undergraduate, graduate and executive students.

Ivey's faculty members write primarily field-based cases to support their teaching, and the cases are used extensively in Ivey's undergraduate, MBA and executive program curriculums across seven major functional areas: accounting, finance, general management/strategy, human resources management/organizational behavior, management science and information systems, marketing, and production and operations management. In addition, some Ivey cases are intended for an introductory audience - the equivalent of the first two years of an undergraduate program. These cases tend to be shorter and more focussed than our regular cases, which have an intended market of MBA and undergraduate students.
Ivey's case studies are concise, interactive, dynamic, and participant-driven teaching tools designed to guide students through real-world examples of business issues. Students learn to analyze information, develop rational alternatives, make decisions, recommend implementation tactics in time-sensitive situations, and communicate and defend their findings, just as they would as practicing managers.
