Stories from the Other Side: Thematic Memoirs, 5E is an international affirmation of life!

This anthology says "YES!" to life in New Haven, CT; Tucson, AZ; and around the world in 35 short narratives and poems with stops in Haiti, West Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq, Argentina, Venezuela, Costa Rica and back; moreover, we travel back in time, too, stopping in Viet-Nam and the deep South during the American Civil War.

The beauty of the artistic process within composition comes alive through the creative self-expression in these short memoirs, poems and photographs.

This collection teaches the craft of composition with examples of first-person narration and exposition on topics such as:

  • ecology, social-justice issues, work and leisure, volunteering, parenting, mentoring,
  • war, HIV-positive people and third-world survival; moreover, this book illustrates
  • the narrative process in writers' logs that delineate the varieties of steps and approaches to composition.

Finally, this anthology is about human courage and compassion in the face of some of life's more challenging rites-of-passage; these epiphanies are teaching and learning moments captured by new and exciting voices, some previously unpublished. These writers provide a living legacy and lessons in mentoring in the pages and color photographs of this book.

Francis E. Crowley (Editor) and Professor of Humanities Emeritus at Gateway Community College lives in Madison, CT. He writes lyric poetry to share at open-mics in New Haven, CT and in Tucson, AZ - where he travels in January for inspiration. His new collection, The Next Ten Years in Tuscon, is forthcoming in 2010.

Currently, he spends July on the beach with his visiting grandson, Nathan (age 11) who may like poetry - but is not sure.

  • A new thematic section: THE GREEN WORLD AND THE NATURALIST'S EYE includes several, short, vibrant descriptions of the Sonoran desert of Arizona by Ken Lamberton, who won the 2002 John Burroughs Medal for WILDERNESS AND RAZOR WIRE.
  • Walker Thomas from Tucson contributes two ecology-sensitive narratives about two friends: a bat named "ALEX" and a large rattlesnake; he is the author of NOTES FROM A SOLITARY BEAST, which describes Walker's time in the wilderness of Arizona and the life experiences that led a man to live in a cave there for eight years.
  • Three new, narrative poems by Abdennabi Benchehda, who was born in Morocco in 1966. They reflect the culture and recent events in the Middle East, where he lived for several years; he currently resides in Arizona.
  • A new Appendix of "QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION" and "SUGGESTED TOPICS FOR COMPOSITION."
