Part of why I am committed to teaching at Cypress College is that my educational career started at a community college. Like many students, I faced the challenge of pursuing my educational goals while concurrently working a full-time job. However, hard work and perseverance did eventually pay off as I transferred to UCLA.
After graduating with a B.A. in psychology from UCLA, I received a M.A. and Ph.D. from UC Irvine. Most of my research has focused on understanding the development of racial identity, attitudes, and relationships. My areas of specialization are in cross-cultural psychology, stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. I have conducted studies on interracial dating and on the perception/categorization of mixed-race persons. Results of some of my research projects were published in the Journal of Social Psychology and in Advances in Psychology.
I started as a full-time instructor at Cypress College in Fall 2005. Thus far I've taught PSY101 General Psychology, PSY139 Developmental Psychology, and PSY/SOC 237 Cross-Cultural Relationships. In Fall 2006 I will be very excited to teach a newly offered course, PSY251 Social Psychology. Prior to teaching here at Cypress, I taught several courses at UC Irvine and at CSU Los Angeles. Most of my university teaching has focused on four primary areas of psychology: Social Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Research Methods/Statistics.
When I'm not pursuing my passion for teaching, you will find me at home with my family. I am very happily married and am now the proud mother of two young boys (ages 4 and 2 months). When I manage to find free time (which is more and more rare these days), I love to cook, scrapbook, eBay, and go camping with my family.
I am currently on maternity leave but will return in Fall 2006. I am very happy to be a part of the Cypress family and I hope that I will see you in one of my classes!
