As part of the Association for the Study of Higher Education Reader Series, the History of Higher Education, now in its third edition, offers faculty and graduate students of higher education many learning aids, including this website. The contents of this website are primary and supplemental readings that augment the material presented in the Reader. The readings are organized in the same fashion as the Reader: First, a preface on the nature of the historical inquiry and method in American higher education from past President of the History of Education Society Linda Eisenmann invites the reader into the complex past of higher education. Second, a six-part extended introductory essay by Les Goodchild on the themes and readings of the book in each part of the text, which provides an overview for each chronological period of American higher education. Third, the Reader’s major contribution is the compilation of important journal articles, book chapters, and essays from the best higher education historians for each period. Fourth, this website, which has over 250 readings that capture the flavor and meaning of important issues for each chronological period covered by the new edition of the Reader. These extensive readings are categorized in the following manner: (1) General—classic statements and overviews; (2) European and Colonial eras; (3) Antebellum era; (4) the 19th century Proliferation era; (5) the 1900 to 1950 era; (6) the post-World War II era; and (7) Appendixes—bibliographies and specialized studies. The website also contains articles dropped from the third edition of the Reader, which faculty may wish to have their students use, as well as an updated bibliography of the history of higher education.
